Growing Non-GMO Arkansas Green Lint Cotton Seeds
Begin by selecting a sunny location with well-drained soil. Cotton prefers loamy or sandy soil with a slightly acidic pH of 6.0 to 6.5. Before planting, amend the soil with well-rotted compost or aged manure to improve fertility and drainage. Adding a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (like a 10-10-10 mix) at the time of soil preparation will provide essential nutrients for early growth.
In warmer climates (Zones 8-11), cotton can be direct-sown once soil temperatures reach at least 65 F. Sow seeds 0.5 to 1 inch deep and space them 12-24 inches apart, with rows spaced 30-36 inches apart. For cooler zones, start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before your last frost date. Use biodegradable pots for easy transplantation to avoid disturbing the roots. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for about a week before transplanting them into the garden once the soil is warm and all frost risk has passed.
As plants grow, apply a high-nitrogen fertilizer about 4-6 weeks after planting to support leafy growth. Once buds begin to form, switch to a fertilizer with more phosphorus and potassium to promote strong boll development. Keep the area around the plants weed-free to reduce competition for nutrients and water. Mulching around the base can suppress weeds and retain soil moisture.
Cotton typically does not require extensive pruning, but you can pinch back the growing tips when the plant is young to encourage a bushier form. Regularly inspect plants for pests and diseases, and remove any affected foliage to prevent spread. Companion plants like marigolds can deter pests such as nematodes and aphids, while sunflowers can act as trap crops for insects like thrips. Avoid planting cotton in the same location year after year to prevent soilborne diseases and pest buildup. Rotate with crops like legumes, which replenish nitrogen in the soil, to maintain soil health.
Harvesting Arkansas Green Lint Cotton
Cotton is ready to harvest when the bolls, or seed pods, fully mature and naturally split open to reveal the fibers inside. Depending on your growing conditions, this typically occurs about 135 days after planting. The plant will also begin to lose some of its leaves as the bolls dry, signaling maturity. Look for bolls that are fully opened, with dry, fluffy green lint that easily pulls away from the pod. Avoid harvesting bolls that are still partially closed or damp, as this can lead to mold or lower-quality fiber.
To harvest, wear gloves to protect your hands from the sharp edges of the boll hulls. Gently pull the lint and attached seeds from the open bolls. After harvesting, store the cotton in a dry, airy location to prevent mildew. If you're saving seeds for the next planting season, remove them from the lint once fully dried and store them in a cool, dark place.
About Arkansas Green Lint Cotton Garden Seeds
These naturally colored fibers were used for clothing during times of dye shortages. The green hue was especially valued for its subtle beauty and utility.
These fibers are shorter than modern white cotton, making them less suited for large-scale industrial textile production but perfect for hand spinners and crafters looking for sustainable, dye-free options. The natural color deepens with washing, adding to its appeal for eco-friendly textile enthusiasts.
Early domestication of this plant began with wild cotton species thousands of years ago, particularly in Mexico and Peru.
Schools and community gardens often grow this cotton to teach about agriculture, history, and sustainability, making it an excellent tool for hands-on learning.
