Growing Pampas Grass Garden Seeds

Pampas grass is traditionally grown outside and grows so large that there is little reason to ever grow plants indoors. Seeds are very small and commonly blended with sand to increase visibility if broadcasting directly. Cortaderia selloana will germinate in 14-21 days with full lighting. Lightly press without covering 4-5 Pampas grass seeds in dry, medium moist, and well-drained soil in full sun. Once established, Pampas grass performs well in regions prone to drought, heat, and poor soils. Pampas grass is known to reseed so vigorously that it is considered an invasive species in many regions. The blades of grass are notorious for being sharp enough to cut human skin. Cortaderia selloana is not susceptible to any pests or diseases. Pampas grass seeds are perennials that mature in their 2nd year as enormous 6-10' tall grassy uprights with a 4-6' spread of tall and feathered grass stalks.

Cortaderia selloana, or otherwise known as Pampas Grass, is native to Brazil, Argentina, and Chile, and the common name, Pampas, is in reference to the Pampas Grasslands in Argentina. Pampas became internationally popular during the Victorian Era in which it was grown heavily in England, and introduced to the United States in 1848, becoming one of the most widespread ornamentals in the southern and western states.
