How to Grow TW Cross Cabbage F1 Seeds

Start cabbage indoors in the late winter. Plant 3 or 4 seeds per pot, under very bright light. Sow 1/4” deep. Thin to the strongest plant before transplanting. Cabbage does best in humus-rich soil with a large amount of organic matter. Consider transplanting on top of 1/2 cup of balanced fertilizer. If the plant will not form heads it could be from an imbalance of too much nitrogen to phosphorous. Although this variety is incredibly heat tolerant, remember that cabbage requires cooler weather to form heads.

Harvest when the heads are firm to the touch and when the inside is dense. Heads are known to split due to over-maturity. Excess watering can cause rapid growth and therefore splitting. Early varieties tend not to store as well as later season varieties.

Culinary Tips

Sauté, fry, boil or eat cabbage raw in a slaw or pickle it in a kraut. Cabbage is called for in a variety of dishes across the globe. The leaves contain less water than lettuce and are tougher raw. The slightly bitter flavor tends to soften when boiled, fried or sautéed. Cabbage is an excellent source of potassium and vitamin C.
