Growing Non-GMO Red Chief California Poppy Flower Seeds
California Poppies do not transplant well, so direct sow them for best results. Sow after the last frost, as they require soil temperatures of 60-65 degrees for germination. Choose a location with proper soil and full sun and amend if needed. Plant 2 to 3 seeds a quarter inch deep every 6 to 8 inches, and thin seedlings to 10 to 12 inches apart once they are about an inch tall. In zones warm enough for them to function as perennials, cut back in the winter to encourage growth in spring. In annual zones, Red Chief California Poppies will readily re-seed if allowed!
These flowers bloom from spring to summer, depending on your climate. Deadhead the blooms to encourage more blooming or prevent them from re-seeding.
Red Chief California Poppy in the Flower Garden
California poppies make a great mass-planting flower for large spaces, especially in hot desert climates. They work well mixed in beds with other flowers, too! Since they readily re-seed, they can create a low-maintenance meadow or yard space year after year. Add them to your pollinator garden to bring in more native species, or plant around vegetable beds and along paths for a fiery burst of color. Red Chief California Poppies are container- and raised bed-friendly and make a great choice for those locations.
Landscape Use of Red Chief California Poppy
As native desert plants, Red Chief California poppies are perfect for gardeners in zones that often struggle to overcome the heat. They readily fill spaces wherever they are planted and thrive in dry soils. Mass planting them over large beds or even lawns can create a sea of cheery color all season long! California poppies are hardy and easy to grow for even the most inexperienced grower. In cooler zones, these fiery flowers thrive as annuals that easily reseed and come back year after year. Red Chief poppies will also thrive in window boxes or porch planters and make a great pet project for kids.
