Horehound is an old-time favorite medicinal and culinary herb. You can use it to help soothe a sore throat, and ease coughs, indigestion, and colds. Because it is part of the mint family, you will find it shares many growing qualities with its relatives. It is recognizable by its deeply veined leaves that are covered with tiny hairs. Unlike many herbs, horehound develops a woody stem. Its unique bitter taste falls somewhere between licorice and root beer making it popular for old-time candies, cocktails, beer flavoring, and some seasoning mixes. Growers will find the most success growing this herb between the USDA hardiness zones of 3 and 9.
