To aid in germination the University of Washington suggests scarifying or nicking the seed coating with a pocket knife, sandpaper, or with hydrogen peroxide. While this may help if you experience unreliable germination, it is completely optional. Presoak the Nasturtium seeds for 5-6 hours in water. Prepare an even-growing surface of coco coir or fertilizer-free potting soil by lightly patting it down and misting it with water until it is wet. Sprinkle the Nasturtium seeds densely across the surface. Avoid overlapping seeds and keep them evenly spaced. Water them in with a mister or spray bottle. Place a second black tray or blackout dome on top of the seeds for a blackout period that lasts 3-5 days.
The temperature should be around 65-70 degrees fahrenheit. Spritz with water as needed throughout the blackout time. Generally not much watering is required until after the seeds have sprouted. Bottom watering is preferred to decrease the risk of mold on the surface. If mold starts to grow, spray with hydrogen peroxide. The amount of time between waterings will be different for everyone based on the room temperature and your watering habits. Generally, if growing your seedlings in direct sun with a shallow tray, you will have to water them much more frequently than when growing them under a grow light in a deep tray. Check the bottom tray daily and refill with 1-2 cups of water when dry. After germination be sure to move your seedlings to direct sun or under a grow light. Harvestable in 12-14 days.
Benefits of Nasturtium Microgreens
Nasturtium is rich in numerous vitamins and minerals such as vitamins A, B, C, and copper. It also has plentiful antioxidants, which have been shown to prevent and reduce the risk of various cancers. Nasturtium leaves are also a great source of potassium and fiber, both critical parts of a balanced diet.
If you choose to grow these microgreens to maturity, you may enjoy a spread of edible flowers as well (55-70 days). Their flowering habit may not be as reliable as other varieties.
