It offers superior performance in its large yields of dark green smooth leafed heads with less wax than other varieties. How to Grow Ryokuho Chinese Broccoli
To get the most from your plants sow seeds in the late spring and fall seasons (cool areas). It can be planted year-round in sub-tropical regions. You can start planting as soon as the soil is workable and temperatures are stable, not dipping below 50 degrees Fahrenheit for more than a week. Ryokuho Chinese Broccoli is frost tolerant however temperatures remaining too cool for an extended period can signal bolting in the plant.
Keep the soil moist, but not too wet as wet roots can lead to damping down. To maintain proper drainage, use loam soils and amend native soil with organic matter to improve drainage and moisture retentive properties.
Harvesting Chinese Broccoli
Harvest the main stalk when it's about 8-10" tall and there are 2-3 flowers about to open. After this, cut the plant branches freely for an extended harvest. The stems and leaves will be smaller for following harvests.
Culinary Tips
These Chinese Broccoli stalks produce soft leaves that are tender with crispy stems that have an excellent flavor when steamed, used in stir-fry dishes, or soup. You can also consume the broccoli leaves raw in salads that are often topped with a sesame dressing.
